What I Walk For

I’ve been apart of south's fashion show for the last three years and March 1st will be my last time I will be able to walk down the runway with my friends and display my work. The fashion show is a wonderful way for the design students to expose their work. I remember transferring out of a class my freshman year and into a textiles 1 class, or apparel 1. I honestly thought that being in textiles meant that I would be learning literally different textiles, fabrics, knits...etc. But it turns out it was a sewing class. When I was in 7th grade I took a sewing class and it was awful I was sure I really didn't like it. So when I joined the class my expectations were low. Who knew having a good teacher and friends in the class would make it more enjoyable. That semester I made many things but I displayed a dress and a shirt in that year's fashion show. Despite being my awkward little freshmen self i still walked down that runway and had a blast! Did i look weird? Probably, yes. Was i nervous? Of course! I swear i was sweating so much, probably an unreasonable amount. But after that year being in the fashion show became a bit of a tradition for me.
The next year I made sure that i had textiles second semester, knowing that the fashion show would happen then. That years fashion show was crazy for me, I had three wardrobe changes, because I also was apart of another scene for my design trends class. Another tradition added was having my sister and friends modeling my clothing and being apart of my senses which is one of my favorite parts about the fashion show now. The most exciting thing about the fashion show is the hustle and bustle behind the curtains. Everybody excitedly whispering and getting antsy to walk out their and strut their stuff.

My junior year was for sure my most favorite year, so far at least. My group included my sister and some really cool girls that i'd always wanted to meet but never did because they were upperclassmen and our paths had not passed until now. But that’s what made it so much fun, everybody was so inclusive and encouraging.
Another great thing about the fashion show is the process. Coming up with ideas, getting inspiration for a scene, lighting, music set and executing it properly is incredibly rewarding. This year the theme of the fashion show is metamorphosis, and earlier in the year my teacher, Miss. Schwartz, had mentioned being able to remove items of clothing , kind of morphing into another outfit, for one of my other project. So as well as using it for that project i also decided that it would work for the fashion show as well.my scene this year is called Mystique, which is based off of the superhero that changes form and morphs into different figures.
I'm incredibly excited for my last year of being in the fashion show and actually quit sad as well. I have made so many amazing friends and memories through being apart of the schools fashion program and I know that it has helped guide me to the career path i want to take. I'm so unbelievably thankful for such a wonderful teacher that has helped me find a love for sewing and fashion and creation. I hope that one day i can be doing this but for paris, london, New York fashion week.
